Get Vaccinated

The single, most effective way to prevent getting the flu is to get vaccinated. In order to ensure protection, it is recommended to get vaccinated as soon as the vaccines are available (ideally by October.)

Vaccinations Available for the 2014-15 Flu Season

Traditional flu vaccines made to protect against three different flu viruses (called “trivalent” vaccines) are available. Trivalent flu vaccine protects against two influenza A viruses, H1N1 and an H3N2, and an influenza B virus.

  • Standard-dose trivalent shot (IIV3)- manufactured using virus grown in eggs
  • Intradermal trivalent shot- which is injected into the skin instead of the muscle and uses a much smaller needle than the regular flu shot
  • High-dose trivalent shot- approved for people 65 and older
  • Trivalent shot- containing virus grown in cell culture, approved for people 18 and older
  • Recombinant trivalent shot- egg-free, approved for people 18 through 49 years of age (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014).

Vaccines that prevent two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses are called quadrivalent vaccines.

  • Quadrivalent flu shot
  • Quadrivalent nasal spray
